ZIA Bookmarks

I frequently end up with bits of paper cut from the edges of larger pieces. Sometimes I cut them down to zentangle tile size or ATC size, or if they're very skinny I make bookmarks.

When I was trying Mooka the other day, I kept filling the negative spaces, but wanted to fill the Mooka frondlets with tangles. I needed to refresh my memory with tangles that go on lines or fill long, thin bands of space. Mooka also got me wanting to do curvy, organic, botanical, flowing things. I thought about Justine Ashbee's gorgeous linear art and the patterns Joanna Coke sometimes puts over her paintings and some of Jane Monk's floral designs (note the border here, top right and bottom right corner). Maybe I need a first name that begins with 'J'!

I pulled out a few bookmarks to experiment on. Three of them had two-pencil strings. Mooka found its way into three of them! Here are the results.

I think it's cool how this photo looks almost like a zentangle inspired art 'ensemble' even though each strip was pencil-strung individually.

  1. I thought they were an ensemble until I found otherwise, they work so well together :D Lovely work!

  2. These are stunning, Margaret! It's inspired me to use my off cuts too. And the way you've displayed them - it looks like you could do a larger piece of ZIA tangles and *then* cut it into strips to make bookmarks - give people a set as a gift. Hmm... food for thought! Thank you. xoxo

  4. Beautiful! And it does look like an ensemble - must be because the long curves are similar in each. I like the idea. It would make a great framed piece on that black.

  6. Exquisite! It really does look like an ensemble piece - perhaps your subconscious is doing more planning than you realized! *G* Beyond beautiful!

  7. Margaret, these are really pretty! You could frame this as an emsemble just like it is. I make bookmarks with my extra paper too. I laminate them and give them away at my classes to anyone who buys a kit, or if I do giftaways. Everyone loves them.

  8. Sande, I think you're right about the long curves.

Sue, I like the idea of giving one to anyone who buys a kit! I'm going to do that too from now on. (Now to remember to take some along to my classes!) I haven't laminated any yet - I rather like the feel of the paper - so I do spray them with fixative. although laminating would preserve them better. I'll reconsider that.

  9. Margaret,

How about your work as pieces of jewllery: pendants, brooches or even earrings. flat on ceramic or encased paper, or 3-dimensional like a big illuminated bead. Have you thought of that already?

  10. Wendy, I have thought of that, but I hesitate to add jewellry making to my repertoire. I feel I don't have enough time as it is!
