Ing stars

Zentangle has released a new tangle, Ing. It's the Diva's challenge this week, and I've been having fun exploring it. It has lots of possibilities!

I wanted to try Ing in a circle, and also wanted to use a lot of sparkly pens (Sakura's Stardust pens) so I got out a white, a black, and a tan zendala tile and a fistful of sparkly pens. Unfortunately, the sparkles barely show up in these scans, a real shame.

Once I started drawing Ing around the circles I realized that it was going to make some interesting stars. Somehow mine all have eight points; that's what seemed to fit zigzagging around a circle. Here are my three stars.

On a white tile, with blue and green Stardust pens, metallic pens, color micron pens and color pencils.
Tangles: Ing plus Black Pearlz and Tripoli
On a Renaissance tile with a copper (orange) Stardust pen, micron pens, white Gelly Roll, and color pencil. This one is my favorite, which is curious because brown and orange is probably my least favorite color combination.
Tangles: Ing, plus Black Pearlz, Tipple and elements of Munchin
On a black tile with Stardust ink, white ink, black ink, gray ink and color pencil. The vaguely-yellowish gray is, in fact, a silver Stardust pen.
Tangles: Ing, plus Tipple, polka dots and stripes.

  1. Ooooh! That looks like fun! I love the stardust pens, and I am currently exploring blending colors to make a smooth gradation from one to the next. Hoping to be able to try that in Circl-Ing!

    1. I find that with the metallic pens, and others that remain wet for a bit, I can do some blending if I use them side by side and touch them together at the end. Also maybe try running a thin line of water between the two?

  3. I have had some success just drawing the new color over the first one. When I tried water, i ended up washing out the color and just having the glitter on the page. I probably used too much water, so I am still working on it to get the effect that I see in my mind. Anyway, thanks so much for sharing this technique. You have inspired me so much!

  4. All beautiful, but the second one is breathtaking. Like you, those are not my favorite colors, but in this zendala......

  5. All the tiles are fantastic, but the middle one is so appealing. I wouldn't wear those colours but zentangle seems to give these colours a whole new life.

    1. I wouldn't wear them either Chrissie, or want them in my house, but you're right about Zentangle. I enjoy using browns in my art, and I almost always like what I do on the tan tiles.

  9. Your "experiments" are all so beautiful. Can you tell us how you started? From the center? with ING or a star shape. All so beautiful, the seconded being my favorite also, your color work is something to be envied.

    1. I think I had a couple of concentric circles (in pencil?) on the round tile. I began tangling with the larger star (easier to work larger! ) and did the smaller one later. Just started drawing a zigzag for Ing around a circle and the star shape appeared. Interesting how on all three tiles it's the smaller star at the center that seems to stand out.

    2. This is interesting how shapes just appear. Thank you for the insight.

  12. Ooh. So that's what you can do with ING. Lovely, as usual.

  13. Oh Margaret these are splendid! I would never have thought to make ING go around, perhaps it's the fear of experimenting and "messing" up! I'm so glad I can come to your site and always learn something new (it doesn't mean I'll be able to do it though!). And then your expertise with colour, that's a whole other story!

    1. Thank you David! It's interesting how so many of usanage to use 'ing' as a verb ending! I'll be doing that too in my next post. Stay tuned! :)

  15. Oh my stars! hahahaha! But all of them are wonderful. I'll be hitting Michael's to find some of those stardust pens, for sure.
