Tinted graphite - February's SketchBox

I've subscribed to SketchBox art supplies for six months and the February box was about graphite and tinted graphite. It's water-soluable, so it can look a bit like watercolor.

The supplies that came in February's box.

I started with some random, pale gray lines, thinking I might do a set of houses as I've done often in the past. However, three mountains appeared instead. This is 4"x6".

How it began

How it ended

I have a set of French curves and used some "as is" to create curvy sections, colored with the tinted graphite, added water, then tangled on top. This is also 4"x6".

Tangles: Black Pearlz, KrliQs, Peppering, Wunderwall

I used tinted graphite, micron pens, and colored pencil to create the piece below on beige tinted paper, again 6"x4.

Tangles: Icantoo, Paizel, Pearlz

I like the tinted graphite better than I expected. I like using water with it, and it offers muted colors, which sometimes is what you want.

  1. Margaret, I LOVE this "new look" from you!! Each piece is gorgeous - I can't even pick a favorite, tho there's no need to try.:D (FYI: I now have a tin of 12 tinted graphite pencils on my Amazon wish list ... after all, Mother's Day is approaching!

    1. Jan, some months ago I lucked into a sale at Staples. They had a number of Derwent sets at half price! I wasn't even sure what "Graphitint" was or what I'd do with it, but I couldn't resist!

  2. Interesting. I didn't know there was tinted graphite. There is a lot I don't know about art supplies.

    1. Sorry I didn't respond earlier Lisa. Yes, there's a LOT I don't know about art supplies too! I don't even bother trying to learn about something unless I can see that it will be useful and interesting to me in the work I do.

  3. I see that in the latest project pack from Zentangle that Maria included a sketch and wash pencil (something I have sketched with for years and years). Inexpensive and fun. So thatwater soluble graphic has been around a long time. But the tinted shades are a very nice new idea.

    1. Hi Ginny! Yes, I've had a Sketch'n'Wash pencil for years too. Rarely did anything with it, but I acquired some tinted graphite pencils a while ago and have recently been enjoying them. Then Zentangle did this PP with graphite washes!

  4. Oh my gosh how much fun! That second piece reminds me of a cat curled up in its bed. Isn’t watercolor pencil a fun tool to play with?

    1. It is, HeidiSue! I like that I can wet it, let it dry, and draw on it, and do that again if I want.

    1. I hope you'll enjoy using it! I found the Derwents have better color than some others.
