CanT challenge, and a new chop?

CanT challenge

A new tangle was developed and presented at CanTangle this past July. It's Chris Titus' baby and the Diva's challenge this week.

I like my first effort better than my second, although the second has more variations which is what I initially wanted to try.
Tangles: Black Pearlz, CanT, Crescent Moon, Cubine, Dex
I managed five variations in my second tile.
Tangles: Black Pearlz, CanT, Gneiss

My new chop?

I have wanted, for quite some time, to develop a signature/initials/chop that was less recognizable as letters and more of an visual/art element. That way it could go anywhere in the artwork and not seem as if the signature should be at the bottom. That way I could change my mind about which way is up, or it could go different ways.

This little graphic happened by accident when I needed to sign the first tile above and tried to put the M on the left of a line and the B on the right. So I used it on the second tile too.

I quite like the 'leaf' look, but I wonder if it will be even more difficult to find on many of my tiles! I could put a circle around it, but there wouldn't always be space. Here are a few variations.

What do you think? Should I go with one of these? Or whichever variation seems appropriate at the time? Should it be larger? Or should I stick with my current MB?

  1. As always I am wowed by your use of pattern and the dept you get with each and every tile by your unique and outstanding shading!

  2. The first tile is really cool, and had me gazing at the composition for quite awhile! Really like all the variations in the second one. I like the new chop....my favorite is the third one with the dot on the bottom. That's the most unique and artistic looking. The second one looks to much like leaves on a plant, especially with the line and dot on the top. I don't care for the circle one at all. That's my two cents! I still have not come up with anything for my initials, so hopefully it will just come to me sometime when it's ready. :)

    1. Thanks Sue. I don't really like the circle either, but I wondered if it might stand out on the page better.

  3. Wonderful variations in your tiles. Clever to fit so many into a small space. I changed to a chop for my initials recently. Mine is a rectangle around the yt and I do find it hard to find space to fit it in so I would advise don't put the circle around it. I think the one with the dot below is best too.

  4. I can see the second one as a tangle pattern - can see the step out already and all of the wonderful possibilities.
I like the mark you have been using over all of the others listed above. Clearly your initials, it is a beautiful, recognizable mark on your masterpieces.

    1. Thanks Lee. I really like it too. I started with a blind string of three nested squares.

  6. Great designs, I really love the second one with all of those variations. The one with the black pearls is my favorite of all of the variations I've looked at so far. Your work is so inspiring.

  7. IMHO: I like the fourth one with the dark 'M' shape. Your first tile is OMG - the cubine window top right is brilliant.

  8. Such beautiful tiles with great designs. As far as the chop concerns, I like the 4th one best, because of the contrast I think.

  9. Love that first tile! Can't give an opinion on the chop I'm afraid as I'm new enough to all this to not even have really considered it. I just sign my tiles but you are right, it does seem to force an orientation which is not always what you want :-/

  11. I like the new chop. It almost looks like the B is a cast shadow from the M. (I'm still struggling with mine.)

  12. I love the little window in your first tile and the way the sections overlap and seem transparent. I love the second one for all the variations you did, especially the auras around the center circle in two of the sections. That tile is a little instructional all by itself! As for your chop, I like the black and white one because it represents the coolest thing you do in many of your tiles, which is to flip black and white at the string line. I love that! As you say, it might disappear into the design, though. My next favorite is the second one with the dot at the top.

  13. Love all your variations and the new chop is cool! I need one. It's so hard with a C and an S...I thought it wouldn't be because of all the curves but everything I try looks dumb. So, I ended up with the S inside the C. Almost looks like a stupid copyright symbol!

  16. Great idea for a 'special' chop. Out of the ones shown, I liked the one second from the right hand end. That touch of the black 'M' really does it !

  17. Love the tiles and the chop ideas. I like the idea of going with whichever one seems right for each tile. The core MB shape is always there, and the various embellishments are fun!

  18. Oh how I need to experiment more with depth and shading. I think I'll have to get back to "Made in the Shade" and do some re-learning. That first tile is amazing. Envious but determined to emulate.

  19. Great tiles,The first is my favorite, but the second's variations are very creative.
I like the second chop best, but I agree with Sue that it looks to much like leaves. and the one with the dot at the bottom is most artistic and best in my opinion.

  20. Fun CanT exploration tiles. I like the chop with the darkened in M because it is quite different that what other chops that are out there look like. It should be an original, like you :)

  21. Love your variations of CanT, especially in the second tile… however I love the openness and the composition of the first one! Chops are tricky - who would have thought they'd be difficult? I just recently settled on mine. Of the ones shown, I by far like the middle one the best with the dot under.

  22. Wow! I am always impress by your work!!
For the chop, I prefer the number 4 (without th point). Did you try to let the M white and put the black on the B? Maybe it should look as a shadow.

    1. I'll try an empty M and a black B and see what it looks like. It's still "in development" but I think it may alter slightly depending on its context in the artwork. Thanks for the suggestion!

  23. The chop : i find the B part a little empty. I think you could add something to make it a little more specific to you.
