The DivaCZT's challenge this week is the tangle Orbs-la-dee from Anneke van Dam. It's a tangle I've used before but had sort of forgotten about. I did three tiles in the crunch time before we leave on vacation for two weeks (to warmer climes, hurray!).
I had started a tile with my new tangle
Trifle and finished it with Orbs-la-dee. In this case I used that tangle to fill a zigzag.

Finally, I did a blind, star-shaped string on a Renaissance tile. I filled the star with this week's challenge tangle, part of the background with gold Printemps, and the rest of the background with black-and-white, always very effective on the tan paper.

ReplyDeleteWow Margaret, all three tiles are beautiful! I can't wait to try your new tangle Trifle (you make it look easy, but ….). I 'specially love the last tile and would love to see it in person as it's hard to really see how effective I bet that gold printemps is!
ReplyDeleteYes, photographing the gold is tricky. I have to get the right angle so it sparkles but it never sparkles everywhere!

ReplyDeleteI like your tree different tiles for this challenge: very special to combine your wonderful Trifle with Orbs-la-dee.On the third tile I like the star with the stripes "coming out" but your second tile is my absolute favorite, uncomplicated but so beautiful drawn.

DeleteSomehow I've lost a comment. It's labelled 'published' but in fact it's not here. The commentor mentioned that this is a fractal design, in fact called a Sierpinsky triangle.

I looked up Sierpinsky after someone on Facebook mentioned the same thing. This is a very similar design. Sierpinsky's gasket is indeed a fractal design. Of course, as a tangle it is less rigidly organized and can be drawn freehand. :)
All 3 tiles are, of course, excellent in your talented hand(s). However, the third one is really special, IMHO. I think it has just the right amount of color and the gold section looks like a textile. I look forward to following your work in 2017. Happy New Year.

ReplyDeleteThese three tiles look very playful - I especially like the middle one. The tangles appear to spring forth from the center! I love looking at your blog and am very inspired by your art mounted on canvas. I have mounted tiles on canvas too and would love to know how you finish them. Do you spray them or paint on varnish? I would really appreciate your expert knowledge here.
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer. Whatever you use to protect your work, make sure it is archival so your paper won't discolour over time. I usually use a matte acrylic varnish, or occasionally gloss.
DeleteThanks for the tip, Margaret. Should I use an isolation layer like acrylic medium on the tile before applying the varnish? I'm not sure if this is necessary.
DeleteI don't. The acrylic varnish is a medium, so no need for another.
